copy and paste from a forum

Never happy leaving well enough alone, I wanted to see just how far I could push the receiver before I found its limits, specifically to test the soft clipping feature of the NAD. It wasn't until I turned the volume to what seemed like 11 that I started to notice a harshness creeping into the upper frequencies. Next, I engaged the NAD's soft clipping circuit to see if it worked as advertised. It did and, to my surprise, the harshness completely vanished, even at full output. I kept this feature enabled, because I heard no reason not to, and it allowed for more extended jam sessions at typically ridiculous decibel levels. Purists might scoff at this idea, but I listened with the soft clipping on and off and it only helps, never seeming to hurt the sound.

It's a blooming frequency filter to protect CHEAP speakers!

Since you hear it at work, Rudi has CHEAP speakers.

NAD is cack.

It protects owners from themselves, mainly designed for fraternity parties so the gear might live through the weekend.

Didn't always work

Post by hifistan on Thu 20 Oct 2011, 07:15

Years ago whan I was an NAD dealer I sold a 3020 amp along with a quite decent pair of British speakers to a beginner; I told him he was unlikely to damage the speakers. He proceded when he got home to engage the soft clipping, turn the bass all the way up and the volume all the way up and play it till he burned out the speakers. He then complained to me that I had told him he was unlikely to damage it; I replied that I had thought he had some sense. I never made that mistake again; the moral is nothing will protect the ignorant from themselves.
